Weekly Television Ratings Report

Posted on 17. Sep, 2012 by in Prowl Articles, The Prowl

Monday, September 17-

Last week, the fall TV season kicked off with a mix of finales and season premieres for NBC, as the network debuted a few new shows after the hit reality TV show “The Voice”, which landed three times in the top ten this week, averaging 11.43 million viewers over Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights. The network also had a season finale with “America’s Got Talent,” which landed twice in the top ten this week, averaging 10.76 million viewers on both Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Fox also debuted season two of “The X Factor” on Wednesday and Thursday, with new judges Britney Spears and Demi Lovato, replacing Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger. The show landed twice in the top five, at #12 and #13 for the debut week, with an average of 8.37 million viewers over Wednesday and Thursday nights. “Glee” also made it’s return to network TV on Thursday night, with the premiere of Season 4, with just under 8.1 million viewers. Good enough for #14 on the top 25 this week.

However, if there will be any big winner this fall, it will be football. NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” launched for it’s seventh season with the debut of Peyton Manning as the Denver Broncos new quarterback as they took on the Pittsburgh Steelers, in a rematch of last year’s Wild Card Playoff. The game was far and away, the #1 watched program this week with 27.57 million viewers. “Sunday Night Football” was the number one show last season, and is looking to keep its ratings crown again for a second season.

Football on cable also cracked the top 25 for the week, as it likely will for the rest of the NFL season. ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” premiered for Season 7 (Season 43 overall, counting it’s days on ABC) with a double-header of games between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Baltimore Ravens, along with the San Diego Chargers taking on the Oakland Radiers. The broadcast averaged 10.9 million viewers, good enough for #6 on the week. NFL network’s debut of “Thursday Night Football” kicked off this week too, as the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers. The broadcast averaged 8.55 million viewers on the night, good enough for #11 on the week.

ABC and CBS have not debuted any new fall programming just yet, as they will kick off their fall seasons starting September 24th.

Winning network this week? NBC. The network had 7 shows in the top ten this week, buoyed by football, “The Voice,” and “America’s Got Talent” obviously, but new rookie sitcoms such as “Go On”, “The New Normal”, and “Guys With Kids” had good starts. “Go On” even cracked the top ten with 9.73 million viewers on Tuesday night.

Losing Network? ABC. The network only had two shows in the top 25, thanks to “Shark Tank” and “20/20″ on Friday night, getting just north of 6 million viewers.
