Monday, February 6—
The Mizzou Tigers women’s basketball team had five straight wins, including a win against No. 25 Kentucky, heading into Sunday’s game against No. 5 Mississippi State. Mississippi State had only one conference loss going into Sunday’s game. Ultimately, the Bulldogs prevailed 70-53.
The game was close to start as the Tigers were only down one at the end of the first quarter. Throughout the quarter, the lead switched multiple times.
At the start of the second quarter, however, the Bulldogs went on a 12-2 run giving them a 30-21 lead. The Tigers did not back down though, as sophomore Sophie Cunningham answered with five straight points, but the lead stayed the same, 36-27, to finish the half.
The Tigers struggled coming out of the half and Mississippi State would take total advantage of their opponent’s struggles, as the Bulldogs jumped out to a double-digit lead that they would never give up. The Tigers tried to claw back as they brought the lead down from 20 to 11, but it wasn’t enough.
Mississippi State held their lead in the fourth quarter as the Tigers went on to lose 70-53.
While the Tigers did lose, Sophie Cunningham ended the game with 19 points and nine rebounds as well as she led the team in scoring. Sophie’s sister, Lindsey, finished the game with eight points and seven rebounds as she played all 40 minutes.
The Tigers look to bounce back when they continue their road trip at No. 25 Tennessee on Thursday, Feb. 9. The tip-off is set at 6 p.m. CST.
