The Student Center held a celebration on Feb. 11 in honor of MU turning 175.

MU was founded in 1839 and has come a long way throughout its history. The Student Center hosted a ceremony to celebrate the milestone. Students, staff and alumni were welcome to the event led by the Leadership Committee at MU.

“We decided we wanted to have it in the student center because we wanted it to be very student oriented” Assistant Director of Communications Michelle Froese said.

The ceremony was officially opened by Assistant Athletic Director Gary Link. Chancellor Loftin, Mason Schara and Jake Wright also spoke at the ceremony. Together, they commemorated MU on it’s accomplishments and hoped for an even better future. The ceremony was closed with the singing of Happy Birthday and the Alma Mater by Mizzou Forte, as well as an appearance from Truman the Tiger

After the program, free cupcakes, ice cream and t-shirts were given out. Students, faculty, and alumni were also encouraged to get involved in a virtual gathering, as the hashtag #Mizzou175 helped gather participants all around the globe.

Congratulations on the birthday MU, and here’s to another 175 more.
