Wilson leads Volleyball past Idaho

After four back and fourth sets against the University of Idaho, Mizzou volleyball took set five (15-10) to seal a victory against the hosting Vandal squad (25-14, 17-25, 25-17, 19-25, 15-10) at the Idaho Invitational in Moscow. It was an important victory for the Tigers after a shocking upset loss to Saint Louis University on Tuesday.

 

The outside hitting duo of Emily Wilson and Carly Kan were the stars of the show for the Tigers. Wilson notched a career-high 22 kills in the match, five of which came in the fifth set. Kan tallied 17 kills and a career-high 23 digs.

 

Senior Whitney Little added three solo blocks in the victory. For Little, the three blocks put her five away from the school record of 454. Setter Loxley Keala also perfomed exceptionally, going for 33 assists and 14 digs. Keala now has a seven game double-double streak on the season.

Mizzou started out the match superbly, recording 18 kills in the first set to defeat the Vandals 25-14. Kan tallied up a team leading 6 kills and 6 digs in set one. It was only the second time they won the first set of the match, the first coming in the season opener against Mississippi Valley State.

The Tigers started strong in set two, but the Vandals shifted the momentum their way after going on a 4-0 run of their own and taking the set 25-17.The Tigers only had a hitting percentage of .100 in the second set, compared to their .385 percentage in the first.

 

Mizzou turned things back around when they started set three with a 7-1 run. Seniors Little and Wilson combined for 11 kills as the Tigers easily took the third set 25-17.

 

But like the second set, the Idaho Vandals came back strong in set four. After going on a run and gaining a modest lead, Idaho took the fourth set 25-19.

 

 

After a long and nerve wracking night, Mizzou ultimately took the match with a 15-10 score in the decisive fifth set. The victory now puts the Tigers at 5-4 on the season., including 2-0 on the road.

 

Mizzou continues play at the Idaho Invitational with 2:30 p.m. match on Friday against the Boise State Broncos.
