55th Grammy Awards: The Winners, The Losers and J-Lo’s Dress

Tuesday, Feb. 12-

The 55th Grammy Awards kicked off with a performance from Taylor Swift, who sang her hit song “We Are Never Getting Back Together” with an interesting circus themed twist. Though the singer is wildly popular, her performance was somewhat of a let down. Many viewers felt she was off-key and did not perform to her usual standards.

After the shaky performance, Adele walked away with Best Solo Pop Performance for her single, “Set Fire to the Rain”. Adele donned an interesting eclectic red tea dress with two different floral patterns, but balanced it with her signature classically beautiful and simple makeup look. However, it was not Adele’s loud patterns that stole the audience’s attention.

Jennifer Lopez presented Adele with the award, and was dressed in a bold black gown with a dangerously high slit. The dress was extremely similar to the intense black dress worn by Angeline Jolie many years ago, which received a lot of scrutiny from fashion critiques.

When J-Lo walked on stage, the camera went straight to the audience to show reactions to the fashion statement. Drake, Jay-Z and Beyonce each showed a visibly surprised, and even confused, reaction to the singer’s dress choice.

The band Fun. snagged Song of the Year for the summertime favorite, “We Are Young”. Everyone was blown away with Justin Timberlake’s performance of his new single “Suit and Tie”. He also showcased a new 60s inspired slick hairstyle that surely had all the female viewers swooning.

However, it just wouldn’t be the Grammy’s if there weren’t one slightly inappropriate comment made. The source? Kelly Clarkson. During her acceptance speech for winning Best Pop Vocal Album for “Stronger,” Clarkson said, “Miguel, I don’t know who the hell you are but we need to sing together!” Though Miguel’s reaction to the statement was not shown, many of the audience members seemed astonished. On top of the verbal wrong, Clarkson also seemed very flustered ad practically stumbled off the stage. There was a lot of questioning of whether or not she was, in fact, drunk. However, her performance later in the show more than made up for it. Word vomit and all, Kelly Clarkson has a gorgeous voice.

One of the biggest shockers of the show was Rihanna’s performance. She traded her edgy bold look and singing of chains, whips and rude boys for a stunning middle part, red lips and simple black floor-length dress. The song she sang was slow, sweet and really showed off her beautiful voice that many people may have forgotten she possessed. With so much criticism from the media for stories of domestic abuse, a love of auto tune and a bad girl image, her performance was a pleasant surprise and received an extremely positive reaction from viewers.

After a performance by The Black Keys and a rockin’ tribute to Bob Marley, Katy Perry’s presence on stage caused a world of chaos in the Twittersphere. Perry followed Rihanna’s lead in choosing a glamorously beautiful look over her wild, crazy infamous style.

Lastly, Mumford and Sons took home Album of the Year with “Babel”. Though the alternative folk band has been gracing many iTunes charts, many tweeters were disappointed with their win and did not feel that the group deserved the honor.

Though some may have been disappointed by some of the results, this year’s Grammy’s was an entertaining success.
