5K Run in Memorial of MU Student

Monday, April 29-

On Saturday morning hundreds of students, family and friends participated in the 15th Annual Chad Run in honor of Chad Eatherly who passed away in March 1999.

Chad was a member of Phi Kappa Alpha Fraternity at Mizzou and loved running. He passed away one afternoon after eating lunch at the fraternity house in his room from a heart problem that neither him nor his family was aware about.

The following month, members of Phi Kappa Alpha worked together to raise money and created the now annual 5K running event. Along with the money raised, a $500 scholarship is awarded to a new member of Phi Kappa Alpha at the event each year.

The run takes place on Mizzou’s campus starting outside of the MU Student Center. Volunteers stood with signs at each corner to direct the participants as they ran. This year, like every other year, Chad’s dad came in from Memphis to speak in memory of his son before the race. He described him as a great friend, role model, peer educator and a loving fraternity brother.

Chad’s fraternity son, Wes Milligan, also spoke on his behalf and described Chad as a person that embodied love and was a person that truly lived to aspire others. He shared a single quote that Chad passed on to new members.

“Build your hopes on things eternal, for they are the things that never break,” he said.
