In an absolute must win series against the worst team in all of baseball, the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates four games out of five to put themselves in a great position to make the playoffs.

After losing game one, the Cardinals took four in a row and dismantled a Pirates team that has already had a rough season. Three of the final four games were only one run victories for St. Louis.

The redbirds had no offense in game one, only managing two hits in a game where they lost Dakota Hudson for the season. The right hander left with elbow tightness and is now going to have Tommy John surgery in the coming weeks. Hudson will most likely miss all of 2021 as well.

However the resilient squad managed a doubleheader sweep the next day, with the offense finally showing some support. St. Louis put up 13 runs on the day in two seven inning games to give them a boost heading into the weekend matchups.

The next day the Cardinals used all the energy in the world to win 5-4. Down by four heading into the seventh they put together a five spot which included ending a no hitter being thrown against them.

St. Louis had to come back again the next day, also in the seventh inning, but this time the deficit was only one. A two-run home run from future hall of famer Yadier Molina put the Cardinals in a position to win and Andrew Miller shut the door in the ninth to preserve the victory.

With playoffs just around the corner, the Cardinals will have to gather as much momentum as possible to compete in the deadly National League.
