Cookie and Cocoa Fun Run for Autism

The Thompson Center is hosting a Cookies and Cocoa Fun Run to support autism on March 1.

“One of our parents has a couple of kiddos that come here to the center,” said Thompson Center Development Coordinator Miriam Cullimore, “she was looking for a way to give back.”

The Fun Run is directed by Jamie McDonald, a mother of three childrne, two of which are autistic, and Micaela Lopez, a volunteer at the Thompson Center. The two plan to raise money and spread awareness for Autism in the Columbia community.

“Anyone who has been to the Thompson Center and has seen all the therapy, they know it is very expensive,” said McDonald.

The run is sponsored by the Thompson Center and will be assisted by several outside organizations, including MU sororities and fraternities, and other volunteers.

“We have a special group of people who help us with events,” said Lopez, “we also have other implementers to help us out during the day.”

Lopez and McDonald’s main goal, apart from raising money, is to give autistic children and their families an outlet for the day.

“When you have autistic children it is hard to get out sometimes into the public. If your kid is having an episode, it’s okay. We all have the same problems,” said McDonald.

The run will be held at Cosmo Park’s Nickell Shelter and starts at 2 p.m.
