Thursday, March 20-

After an early exit in the SEC tournament to Mississippi State, the Missouri women’s basketball team dropped its first-round matchup to the Creighton Bluejays in the first round of the National Invitational Tournament. Mizzou came back from a 12-point deficit early in the first half, but Marissa Janning and Sarah Nelsonwere too much as they combined for 37 points in Creighton’s 77-51 win.

Creighton went on a 14-2 run in the opening 4:19 of play as Alyssa Kamphaus collected her own rebound and put it back up and in for two. It was all Creighton for the next few minutes until Lianna Doty laid it in twice before Bri Kulas hit a jumper to cut the lead to six.

The Missouri surge continued in the end of the first half as Kulas and Doty added another bucket each to give Missouri it’s first lead of the game 24-23. The lead was short-lived, however, as Janning laid it in before Nelson hit a crucial three-pointer for the Bluejays.

With under a minute to play in the half and the score 31-30 in favor of Creighton, Jordan Fredricks laid it in with just six seconds of play to give the Tigers the lead 32-31 heading into the locker room.

In the second half, it was all Creighton. Sarah Nelson hit a jumper with 15:43 left to play to give Creighton a 39-34 lead. Despite a trey by Doty for three of her team-leading 14 points, Creighton’s balanced attack was too much for the Tigers. The Bluejays went on a 12-0 run to take the lead 54-39 with 9:44 left to play.

The Tigers were unable to mount a comeback Janning hit a pair of baskets before sinking some game-sealing free throws to clinch the win for Creighton.

With the loss, Missouri is eliminated from the NIT and will look to next season.
