Mackenzie Mattix – MUTV 23 News Staff Writer

On the beautiful Friday afternoon, MU students, faculty, and other guests gathered at the Bond Life Sciences building to hear of the latest news in the Autistic Phenomenon Project from Dr. David Amaral.

Amaral, shared the groundbreaking neuroimaging research done with young autistic children throughout the past few years. Dr. Amaral spoke of the lengthy process in which a child and the family undergoes, compared and contrasted the brains of autistic children and the control group and expressed his optimism for future research.

Also, many common myths about the contributing factors to autism severity were proven false with many images that were shown. For example, doctors now know that physical features like height and brain size, do not contribute to autism severity.

Dr. Amaral also emphasized the importance of The Medical Investigation of Neurodevelopmental Disorders, or The M.I.N.D. Institute, which is a collaborative international research center, committed to the awareness, understanding, prevention, care, and cures of neuro-developmental disorders. Dr. Amaral encouraged the audience to register with The M.I.N.D. Institute in order to keep up with the released information of research that is yet to come.
