Errors Doom Mizzou Volleyball in Loss

Wednesday, Nov. 21-

After wins in three of its last five games, the Mizzou volleyball team lost to Kentucky in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-14) sweep at home on Wednesday.

Once again it was junior All-American Lisa Henning leading the way for the Tigers in the losing effort. She tallied her 12th double double of the season with 12 kills and 10 digs. She will need to add 18 kills in the final game of the season to become the first Tiger ever with back-to-back 500 kill seasons.

Mizzou fed off the momentum of the home crowd to start the match jumping out to an early lead. After Kentucky took its first lead of the set off a kill by Kayla Tronick, the teams hovered within three points of each other before the Wildcats went to serve out in front 21-17. They scored four straight points to take the set.

The second set was another back and forth affair as only once did either team have more than a two-point lead before Kentucky jumped to a 20-15 advantage thanks to three straight Mizzou errors. The Wildcats then had a 24-17 match point but the Tigers fought back behind to the play of Henning and friends on the front line before a Lauren O’Conner kill gave UK the set victory.

The third and final set was all Kentucky, as the Tigers just couldn’t get anything going. While they started out with a 4-2 lead, the Wildcats scored eight of the next nine points to pull ahead 10-5. Mizzou couldn’t handle the Kentucky attack as the Wildcats scored seven straight points to take an 18-6 lead. The Tigers would never get close again as Kentucky closed the match out with ease.

While a win against Kentucky would’ve given a nice boost to the Tigers’ NCAA Tournament hopes, they have one more chance to bolster their resume when Alabama comes to Columbia at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
