Eye Sets School Record, Turnovers Doom Tigers

Mike Bonomo brings you all of the highlights from Missouri women’s basketball’s matchup against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Sunday, Feb. 10-

A back and forth game ended up going the Mississippi State Bulldogs (11-12) way as the Missouri Tigers (15-9) women’s basketball team lost 61-56.

Both Mizzou and Mississippi State played very good defense throughout the game as each shot under 40 percent from the field.

The Bulldogs got out to a hot start but a 6-0 run by the Tigers kept the game close. After a seesaw half, Liz Smith and Sydney Crafton hit four straight free throws for the Tigers to send the game into halftime tied at 25-25.

Mizzou came out of the locker room on fire as it started out on a 12-6 run but a couple of Mississippi State threes brought the score to within one. MSU then went on a little run of its own but Liene Priede netted a nice fade away bucket to halt the momentum. Priede seemed to stop all of the Bulldogs spurts as she finished the day with 14 points shooting 6-7 from the floor.

The Tigers were down two with 1:21 left, but a defensive lapse led to a Bulldog layup. After that, the Tigers needed to foul and MSU nailed all of their free throws to give seal the victory.

In the end, the Tigers hurt themselves, committing 20 turnovers. Normally sure-handed freshman Lianna Doty led the team with six.

Also contributing to the loss was poor shooting. The Tigers who usually rely heavily on the three-ball, shot just 3-20 from behind the arc. Two of them came from Morgan Eye. Her first half long ball gave her the school record for most three-pointers in a season. Eye’s 92 three point baskets broke Alyssa Hollins’ record of 90 threes that was set in the 2007-2008 season.

The Tigers look to get on back on track as they travel to Vanderbilt on Feb. 14.
