The Mizzou wrestling team started the season off on a disappointing note as the 7th ranked Tigers lost 29-10 to the 18th ranked Virginia Tech Hokies. The loss came at the hands of a 133 lbs forfeit and 3 bonus point wins by the Hokies. However, it wasn’t all bad, as the Tigers picked up wins in the 149 lbs, 174 lbs, and 197 lbs weight classes. The wins started in a top-25, 149 lb bout between Mizzou’s 2nd ranked Brock Mauller and VT’s 23rd ranked Brent Moore, where Mauller dominated Moore and won 6-0. Mizzou then lost the next two matches at 157 and 165 lbs, giving the Hokies a lead going into the 174 lbs bout. That’s when 8th ranked Senior captain Connor Flynn took charge and had a dominant 12-1 win over Cody Hughes to tie it up at 7-7. No.14 Dylan Wisman then lost his bout against No.9 Hunter Bolen 10-9, giving the hokies a 10-7 lead midway through the dual. Then Mizzou’s No. 20 Wyatt Koelling won an 8-1 decision over VT’s Stan Smeltzer to tie the dual at 10-10, but the tie was short lived as a Rodrigo Diaz major decision loss put Mizzou into a 14-10 hole, which was sealed by a Dack Punke 2-0 decision loss, a pin at 141 lbs, and the 133 lbs forfeit.
