On Monday, Oct. 20, Mizzou’s 103rd homecoming week kicked off with the talent show in the Missouri Theatre.

The competition spanned three nights, Monday through Wednesday, and is one of the core traditions that make up Homecoming Week at MU. Students could perform in groups or individually, with acts ranging from skits to singers.

“They’re all in matching outfits, so I feel like they’re going to do some pop dance routine,” said MU student Madeline Shaw, catching a glimpse of a colorfully-dressed group of skit performers heading backstage before the show.

The bulk of the acts hailed from Greek Town, with members from different fraternities and sororities performing themed skits, complete with elaborate sets, costumes, and props.

“I just like seeing different chapters, how they deal with the different themes that they have to incorporate,” said MU student and skit performer Sam Maassen.

“I really didn’t think before that a group of guys and girls that don’t know each other can put something together that actually works out so well, and it’s amazing to see what the product came out to be,” sorority member Alli Laddy explained.

Many of the acts had been working on their performances for over a month and were excited to finally put them on the stage.

The competition’s first night drew a large crowd at the theatre, and was also live-streamed online and at the Student Center by MUTV, so everyone could get a chance to see the wide variety of talent at MU.

“There’s so much talent coming out of this school and this is a great way to show it, especially in the Greek community,” said Alpha Epsilon Pi member, Jack Fargotstein.

The Mizzou Alumni Association sponsored the competition, and the winning act will be announced later in the week.
