How College Counselors Can Help You

Last week, first lady Michelle Obama wrote about the importance of school counselors for American students in a USA Today Op-ed.

Her argument was that school counselors are the “key” in helping students achieve an education post high school.

It is evident that students with a college degree make a significantly greater yearly income than those with only a high school diploma. The first lady is trying to change that.

According to the American School Counselor Association, a counselor should have no more than 250 students, the national average is 471 students per counselor.

MU students feel the strain of relationships and intimacy on campus as well.

“I don’t have a close relationship with my counselor, but if I needed her she could help me,” said MU Student Rachel Radecki,”I don’t know her on a personal level, whatsoever”.

Another issue that students face is the helpfulness of their counselors when making class decisions.

“A couple times I thought a class that I took met a requirement and it didn’t, even though the counselor said that it would,” said MU Student Morgan McOlash.

Despite local concerns, first lady Michelle Obama is advocating for the national support and spread of college counselors in order to properly assist their students.

In order to further promote the support behind college counselors, the National School Counselor of the Year will be honored at the White House.
