The International Programming Committee hosted its biannual International Welcome Party, where many MU student organizations celebrated various cultures.

Each group decorated and operated a booth, where attendees received free food and participated in interactive activities such as trivia, origami and writing in Chinese characters.

This event aims to educate students about MU’s international community and to bring  people of different backgrounds together.

“It gives a chance for international students to celebrate their culture and their heritage,” said Yasmine Benchaabane, junior chair. “To a lot of them, coming to school here in America is about them learning about the culture here, and I think they get as much of a chance to celebrate their own culture. This is the chance for them to do so and as well for others to learn.”

18 different countries were represented, including Indonesia, Brazil and Iran.

“I think this event shows Mizzou and the Columbia community how many international students we have at our school and how we have so many different cultures here that people don’t even know about,” said Brett Kempker, senior chair.

Columbia residents and MU students made a big turnout at the event. The MU Rec Center was crowded with people eager to experience what each booth offered.

“I think it brings everybody together because we realize everybody is different and has a different background, but we’re all still part of the same planet,” Benchaabane said.
