Zach Calder – 23 Sports

This game was one of the most hyped up games before the season started. Mahomes vs. Brady 4.0 in the city where the two quarterbacks could meet again on Feb. 7. The two most stacked teams in terms of offensive weapons, with two of the most innovative head coaches in the game. It was a game that was circled on the calendars for both teams all season, and for good reason.

The game itself did not quite live up to the hype for most of the game. The Chiefs led by Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill jumped out of the gates in the first quarter. In one of the most amazing first quarters ever played by a wide receiver Hill had seven catches, for 203 yards, and two touchdowns in the opening quarter. Those are numbers that will make your jaw drop. This helped the Chiefs jump out to an early 17-0 lead in the first quarter.

The second quarter started to tilt the game a little bit with the Buccaneers having a strip sack on Mahomes with the Chiefs in the red zone. The Bucs scored a touchdown on that drive with an elegant show of running down the sideline by Ronald Jones II. The Chiefs would add a Harrison Butker field goal in the quarter to give the Chiefs a 20-7 lead heading into the break.

After kicking a field goal on their first drive of the second half, the Buccaneers were stopped the rest of the half. Tom Brady threw two interceptions in the third quarter. One was a great job by safety L’Jarius Sneed turning around and taking the ball out of the air. The other interception was a miscommunication by Brady and star wideout Mike Evans; this led to Brady having a conversation with Evans on the sideline after the possession. Chiefs’ Hill added another touchdown catch in the quarter giving him three on the day. The Chiefs headed into the fourth quarter up 27-10 over Tampa.

The Bucs started to come back in the fourth. Brady had an excellent touchdown pass to Evans on a fourth down play to make it a 10 point game. The Chiefs then had to punt the ball back to Tampa, and once again Brady found Evans in the end zone to make it a 3 point game with about 4 minutes left on the clock. That’s when the Chiefs decided to show the world just how much they trust Mahomes. The Buccaneers had no timeouts left inside of the two-minute warning, and the Chiefs decided to throw the ball. That’s extremely risky because if the pass is incomplete you give the GOAT a minute to execute a game winning drive. However, Mahomes as he always seems to do came up with the play when it matters most, connecting with Hill on a nine-yard gain as Hill just fell to the ground in bounds effectively ending the game. The Chiefs won 27-24 in a game that was not as close as the score might allude to.
