On Wednesday, March 25, the world experienced a catastrophe it had not experienced in 13 years, the breakup of another boy band. Okay, it was not technically a full on break-up, but the result was synonymous by breaking many hearts all over the world. On Wednesday, Zayn Malik left One Direction.

The announcement was made on the band’s official Facebook page with statements from Zayn, One Direction, and creator of the band Simon Cowell. After five years, Malik decided to call it quits for the sake of being “a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time.” The band “totally respect[s] his decision and send[s] him all [their] love for the future.” Simon Cowell thanked Malik for his involvement but assured fans by stating, “… that Niall, Liam, Harry and Louis are hugely excited about the future of the band.”

While the One Direction and its team maintained calm about the situation, outcries from fans were heard over social media, literal outcries. It was a normal occurrence to see Snapchat stories of fans crying and Vine edits of Zayn’s journey. On Twitter #AlwaysInOurHeartsZaynMalik trended worldwide with somber yet supportive tweets.

Each member also tweeted a variety of responses after the announcement.

The world received a statement and a couple of tweets. But what about the full story? On Friday morning, March 27, Zayn Malik spoke to The Sun revealing a more in-depth explanation of his decision. He stated that he “did try to do something that I wasn’t happy doing for a while, for the sake of maybe other people’s happiness- and that mainly the fans…I just can’t do that anymore because it’s not real to me.” Malik also dispelled any rumors of negativity between the boys- “They couldn’t be more wrong.”

Another bit of interesting information, gathered by E!News, was Malik’s move into making new music, solo. “He’s experimenting with new sounds, and he’s even trying out rapping,” with producer Naughty Boy.

Despite Malik’s sudden change in another direction, it was one of respect. “They’ve been really cool about it,” Malik said. “And they understand that, you know, it’s not real to me anymore. They still want to do it for a while, so they’re going to carry on doing what they want to do. And I think they’re doing to do OK for a while. I think they’re going to be cool.”
