The Cubs in this series looked to avenge their last playoff series against the Marlins which is infamously known for the Steve Bartman play. With no fans in the stadium this year though the fans wouldn’t be a factor in this short best of three playoff series.

Game One: This game was a pitcher’s duel early on with Kyle Hendricks of the Cubs, and Sandy Alcantara of the Marlins going head to head. Entering the bottom of the fifth inning it was still a no-score game until Cubs center fielder Ian Happ launched a ball into the left field stands. This gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead with Kyle Hendricks throwing a gem. The wheels for the Cubs fell off in the seventh inning however as with two men on Marlins left fielder Corey Dickerson hit a home run over the left center wall, which knocked starter Kyle Hendricks out of the game with: 6.1 innings pitched, five hits, three earned runs, three walks, and three strikeouts. The Marlins weren’t finished in the seventh though as two batters later against reliever Jeremy Jeffress, Jesus Aguilar hit a two-run homer to right. This put the Marlins ahead 5-1, and that would be the game’s ending score.

Players of the Game:

Jesus Aguilar: ⅖, 1 XBH, 2 RBI’s

Corey Dickerson: ¼, 1 XBH, 3 RBI’s

Sandy Alcantara: 6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K’s

Game Two: After a postponement on Thursday for bad weather the teams returned to the field Friday in a must win game for the Cubs. This was another pitching duel throughout the game. With Yu Darvish of the Cubs going up against Sixto Sanchez of the Marlins. Both starters pitched great, and made it six frames without allowing a run. The Marlins decided to strike in the seventh though, for the second straight game they brought out their “fish sticks” with a huge home run by Garrett Cooper to left field. Later in the inning Magneuris Sierra singled to right and scored Lewis Brinson. All of this came with two outs in the inning and gave the Marlins a 2-0 lead with nine outs to go. The Marlins bullpen came through and was able to shut down the Cubs which eliminated them from postseason contention. Final Score 2-0 Marlins.

Players of the Game:

Garrett Cooper: ¼  , 1 XBH, 1 RBI

Magneuris Sierra: ⅓, 1 RBI

Sixto Sanchez: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 6 K’s

Brandon Kintzler: 1 IP, 1 H, 3 K’s

The Marlins advance on to play their interdivisional rival the Atlanta Braves. With game one coming up Tuesday, Oct. 6th in Houston.
