Mizzou Men’s Basketball travelled to Cincinnati to open up road play against No. 21 Xavier Tuesday night. The Tigers played from behind throughout most of the first half led by Mark and Dru Smith with a combined 14 points. A last second three pointer by Mark Smith put the Tigers in a manageable position going into the half. Xavier led 28-21 at the break.

Coming out of the half, Dru Smith wasted no time, opening the 2nd period with a three pointer. Xavier then went on a 6 point run to be diminished by the Tiger offense that would then go on a 14-0 run, leaving Xavier scoreless for 5 minutes and claiming the lead. Mizzou spread the ball out during this stretch with scores from Mark Smith, Reed Nikko, Tray Jackson, Jeremiah Tilmon, Dru Smith and Xavier Pinson. Naji Marshall was finally able to break Xavier’s drought with a fastbreak layup.

The teams battled with Mizzou holding a slight lead over the Musketeers until the 0:26 mark when a three pointer by Naji Marshall tied the game at 51. A missed buzzer-beater three pointer from Mark Smith sent the game into overtime.

The Tiger offense was quiet in the five minute overtime period, only scoring seven points, while Xavier went on to score 12 and take the game from the Tigers.

Mizzou was hoping to go into Cincinnati to take this one from the Musketeers and fell short, but highlighted a strong performance from Dru Smith, redshirt junior who made his mark Tuesday night after his bench year. He led the team with 22 points, playing all 40 minutes.

The Tigers come back home to face Wofford at Mizzou Arena Monday Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.
