Missouri Soccer Loses A Close One on Senior Night

Friday, Oct. 28 –

The Mizzou women’s soccer team let one slip through their hands Friday night at Walton Stadium. Iowa State crashed senior night, handing the Tigers a frustrating 1-0 loss.

Before the start of the game, Missouri paid tribute to three senior leaders: Kelsey Blincow, Kendra Collins and Mallory Stipetich. Each played in all 19 games this season.

The first half featured an ebb and flow of stingy defense and lackluster offense. Neither team could find a good scoring chance, resulting in a 0-0 deadlock heading into halftime.

Entering the final 45 minutes of the regular season, Bryan Blitz’s squad picked up the pace. After managing only seven shots in the first half, the girls cracked five in the first 15 minutes of the second frame.

The Cylcones sophomore midfielder Emily Goldstein responded swiftly, launching a shot in the 61st minute. Mizzou goalie Mckenzie Sauerwein got her hands on the ball, but lost her grasp midair and the ball sneaked past for the first goal of the game.

The senior leaders tried to rally the troops and make one last frantic push for a tying goal as Mizzou spouted off 12 shots in the remaining minutes. In the 87th minute, the Tigers had a ripe scoring opportunity off of a free kick. Dominique Richardson directed a header on frame, but a Cylcone defender deflected it away.

The missed chance all but sealed Missouri’s fate as they lost 1-0. Mizzou dropped to 12-7 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

The significance of the loss goes well beyond an unfortunate result on senior night. A home conference defeat to a 9-9-1 Iowa State team does not bode well for the NCAA tournament committee. The Tigers will have to conjure up an impressive outing in the Big 12 conference tournament to capture a tournament bid.

Mizzou gets saddled with the six seed where they will face Baylor in the opening round of the Big 12 tourney. Baylor handed the Tigers a 3-1 loss on Oct. 14.

The three seniors hope to rebound and finish their brilliant careers on a positive note. The showdown with Baylor is slated for Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 2:00 p.m. in San Antonio, Texas.
