Missouri Tennis Squeaks Out Win Over Akron

Friday, Feb. 2-

The University of Missouri’s No. 54 women’s tennis team left LaTuchie Tennis Center, home to the Akron Zips, with sighs of relief after squeaking out a 4-3 win over its hosting competitors.

The matchup began tough for the Tigers when the Zips earned the doubles point after defeating two of the three Missouri pairings. Missouri’s doubles play has been anything but consistent so far this season. The team sits with an 11-14 overall record, keeping matches a little too close for comfort.

While the doubles point could have provided a cushion for the Tigers, they showed fans they could hold their own one on one in the second half of the competition. Senior Maria Christensen cashed in the first singles win for the Tigers, defeating Akron opponent Angelika Jogasuri 6-0, 6-0.

Following close behind her was junior teammate No. 71 Cierra Gaytan-Leach, who ended her match easily 7-5, 6-0.

With two quick and easy wins under its belt, Missouri fought on through the singles slowly, but surely making its way to claim four out of the six matches. Tiger sophomore Alex Clark came from behind in her match, taking Akron’s Madison Cohen to three sets before securing herself a victory 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Though the day didn’t have the most ideal beginning for Mizzou, Friday was a prime example of just how talented this squad is.

The Tigers improved their record to 3-1 on the season, and are looking to continue the momentum against Princeton on Saturday.
