Mizzou men’s basketball advanced in the SEC tournament by beating Georgia 71-61 Wednesday night in Nashville. The Tigers had a clear lead by the second half with a score of 39-27, and senior Jordan Geist led the way with a career-high 30 points. Geist became only the third Tiger to post 30 points against an opponent in the SEC since Mizzou joined the league.

Freshman Xavier Pinson had a strong game by posting 15 points, helping pave the way for the Tigers. With Pinson’s 15 points, Mizzou has now seen freshmen reach double figures in 12 of its last 13 games. After scoring a season-high 20 points in Mizzou’s loss to Ole Miss last Saturday, Pinson has put together his highest-scoring performances in the last two games. Sophomore Mitchell Smith scored six points and had four rebounds in 16 minutes. He became the first Mizzou forward to post at least three steals in a game this season.

After gaining a season-best 50 rebounds against the Bulldogs in the Tiger victory last Wednesday, Mizzou outrebounded Georgia 37-34. Mizzou has now outrebounded opponents in 24 of 31 games this season and in nine straight contests.

After Georgia tightened the gap 52-48 with a massive dunk, Geist scored a nice three to push Mizzou in front by seven points. Both Geist and Pinson combined to score the next eight points for Mizzou, giving them a 60-50 lead with only three minutes 31 seconds remaining. Mizzou has now won three of their last four games leading into Thursday’s matchup with Auburn.

Next up Mizzou advances in the tournament to face fifth seed Auburn in the second round of the 2019 SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament. The teams square off at 2:30 p.m.
