Men and Women’s Cross Country saw action this past weekend at Vanderbilt’s Commodore Classic. It has been a promising start to the season for both squads. Each team brought home a top-5 finish with the men taking fifth and the women grabbing fourth in a field of fifteen teams each.

Coming in 11th overall, Thomas George led the men to their 141 point finish. Kieran Wood came in 8 seconds behind George to grab the 14th overall spot. Martin Prodanov, Victor Mugeche, and Oaklee Hauschild rounded out the scorers for the Tigers.

The women have a lot to be excited about after their trip to Nashville. Sarah Chapman, Jordyn Kleve, and Jenna Schwartz all placed in the top-25. Kleve and Schwartz were separated by less than two seconds. Sophia Racette and Hannah Thomas filled the final scoring slots for Mizzou.

Jenna Schwartz’s performance garnered some attention as she found herself named SEC Freshman of the Week. Schwartz is the second Tiger to earn the award this year, after her teammate Ginger Murnieks was given the honor following Mizzou’s Cross Country Opener. It is exciting for the Tigers to have such a talented group of freshmen already performing well at the college level.

Both the men’s and women’s teams finished second among SEC teams at the meet. The Tigers were bested only by Ole Miss, and finished atop Georgia, Auburn, and Vanderbilt.

The Tigers return to Columbia for the Gans Creek Classic on Friday September 27th. Following the home meet, Mizzou will race just one more time before beginning postseason action at SEC Championships on the first of November.
