The Missouri Tigers defeated the Troy Torjans this past Saturday by a score of 42-10. Mizzou’s elite defense once again shined, limiting Troy to just 235 yards on offense, (for reference, their punter had a total of 239 yards). Leading the charge was Cale Garrett, who has been the most explosive player on the Tigers defense since the start of 2019. The senior linebacker is enjoying his best season by far, leading the SEC in interceptions and touchdowns, while ranking seventh in total tackles through Mizzou’s first five games. Garrett continued this breakout campaign this past week against the Trojans, intercepting QB Kaleb Barker twice and scoring a touchdown in this third straight game. Garrett was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week in week 3, and has a very good chance of taking home that honor after this performance.

Unfortunately for Tigers fans on the other side of the ball, Quarterback Kelly Bryant left in the second quarter after a gruesome leg injury and did not return. Taylor Powell took over in the third quarter and completed six of eight passes for 57 yards. However, Mizzou was held scoreless for the final half of the contest. Multiple reports surfaced that Bryant was not seen limping and appeared to be okay, but head coach Barry Odom has yet to confirm or deny any speculations. Before exiting, Bryant threw for 221 yards and 3 touchdowns, while also rushing for 20 yards and another score. Continuing with the ground game, Larry Rountree III rushed only nine times for 56 yards but added a touchdown on the game’s opening drive. Albert Okwuegbunam, Johnthan Nance, and Jalen Knox were each a recipient of a Bryant touchdown pass. Kam Scott led all receivers with five catches for 88 total yards.

Even with the rain showers to start the game, the Tigers broke through and improved to a 4-1 record, (with those four wins all coming at home). For the Trojans (2-3), they will look to put an end to their two-game losing streak this week vs South Alabama (1-4). As for Missouri, the Tigers host Ole Miss (3-3) in their annual homecoming game next Saturday.
