Friday, February 14th, the Missouri Tigers gymnastics squad, ranked 19th in the nation, took third place among four schools at the Mardi Gras Invitational in St. Charles, Missouri.

Mizzou totaled a score of 196.450 points, trailing only slightly behind No. 18 Iowa State (196.625 points) and No. 9 Louisiana State (197.875). Lindenwood University finished fourth with 193.500 points.

The Tigers didn’t get off to the best of starts, scoring a 48.800 on the meet’s first event, beam. Head Coach Shannon Welker acknowledged this stating, “We had a little bit of a slow start on beam, we were a little tentative over there to start.”

They were able to recover well on the floor event, thanks to the performances of freshman Helen Hu and junior Gabrielle Gottula. Both Tigers scored a mark of 9.875 on floor, freshman Sienna Schreiber added to the effort, posting a score of 9.85.

Missouri flourished on the bars, tying a team record of 49.400 set in March of 2004. Freshmen phenoms Helen Hu and Sienna Schreiber were, once again, to thank for the historic performance. Both posted scores of 9.95 and were aided by a 9.85 from junior Chelsey Christensen, and two 9.825s from sophomore Alisa Sheremeta and senior Morgan Porter.

Unfortunately, bars were the only event which Mizzou won for the meet. Although keeping competition close, the Tigers were never able to close the gap, ultimately placing third.

It won’t be long until Mizzou gets another shot at LSU. They host the team from Baton Rouge in their next meet, a dual at the Hearnes Center on February 28th.
