The No. 21 ranked Mizzou Tigers walked away with a 1-1 record on their first day of the “Strike Out Cancer” tournament after losing to Iowa State then beating Ole Miss. The Tigers participated in the tournament after the Getterman Classic in Waco, Texas got cancelled due to inclement weather.

Mizzou took on Iowa State to start out the day. Both the Tigers and the Cyclones earned one run in the first inning and put up a scoreless second, but the hitting power of Brooke Wilmes gave Mizzou a 3-1 lead after a two-run blast by the senior outfielder in the top of the third inning. The home run by Wilmes marked the tenth consecutive plate appearance where the senior reached base.

Iowa State answered back with three runs in the bottom of the third to give the Cyclones a 4-3 lead. Mizzou senior Hatti Moore tied the game at four with a solo homerun, and freshman Jenna Laird brought two runs home in the fourth on a power single to center to make the score 6-4.  Iowa State returned in the bottom of the inning with a strong five-run half. All five runs were unearned and came with two outs.

Mizzou threatened to take the lead in the top of the seventh, but could only add two runs, while leaving two runners on in scoring position. The Cyclones beat the Tigers 9-8.

In game two of the day, Mizzou faced SEC opponent Ole Miss. The Tigers took a strong start over the Rebels with a solo home run in the first by Cayla Kessinger and a two RBIs in the second off a bouncing ball to center by Wilmes. Pitcher Laurin Krings went six innings, only giving up two earned runs while striking out four.

Ole Miss finally responded in the third with a run, which was answered by Kimberly Wert who hit a screaming fly out of the park for the second time this season. Kessinger and Wilmes added two more runs with back to back two-out hits in the fourth, sealing the Mizzou victory with a 6-2 final score.

Mizzou’s record improved to 4-2 after the day. The Tigers are scheduled for a doubleheader against Florida Atlantic to finish out the weekend tournament before returning to Florida on Wednesday to face off against UCF in Orlando.
