After run-ruling Cal State-Fullerton to open the Mary Nutter Classic, the Missouri softball team continued a dominant Thursday with a 6-2 victory over Long Beach State.

In the late night game, the Tigers jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first when freshman Amanda Sanchez reached base off a throwing error by the opposing pitcher.

In the third inning, junior Sami Fagan hit her fourth home run of the season to extend the Tigers lead to three. With the longball, she has passed her total of three home runs in her first two seasons with the team. Later in the third, the Tigers scored again when sophomore Natalie Fleming singled in freshman Sydney Sprague to give Missouri a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Long Beach battled back, knocking in two runs to cut the deficit in half and knocking Missouri’s starting pitcher Paige Lowary out of the game. Lowary pitched four complete innings, and allowed just two hits while picking up seven strikeouts and her third win of the season.

Lowary was replaced by sophomore Cheyenne Baxter, who closed out the game for the Tigers with three scoreless inning of one-hit ball to notch her second save of the season.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers responded to the 49ers with an RBI single to right by junior Emily Crane that scored junior Taylor Gadbois. Then, the Tigers added on in the fifth when debuting freshman Morgan Walters scored off of senior Corrin Genovese’s RBI single up the middle. With the Tiger’s lead at 6-2, they cruised to victory to extend their winning streak to four games.

Missouri is now 6-1 on the season, and looks to continue their early success in a Friday double header against Texas at 7:30 p.m. and UCLA at 9:30 p.m.
