The Tiger tennis team had a strong showing in their first match of the year on Saturday, defeating the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks 5-0 at the Mizzou Tennis Complex. The Tigers took the lead in the doubles matchup, winning two out of three, but they really dominated the singles matches, winning the four that were completed and leading in the two matches that got suspended.

The day started with three doubles matches. There was cause for concern for the Tigers early, as Oleksandra Doroshenko and Alessandra Maya Thompson gave SEMO the first victory of the duel, taking care of Serena Nash and Clare Raley 6-1. Mizzou cruised in the other two matches, however, with Amina Ismail and Taylor Gruber defeating Isabella Krupa and Kseniya Zonova 6-2 and Mackenzy Middlebrooks and Ellie Wright defeating Anais Emelie and Maja Lundell 6-1. Those final two victories clinched the doubles point for the Tigers.

Missouri’s performance in the singles matches was even more impressive. In the four matches that were completed no Redhawk was able to finish any closer than a 6-2 loss. Serena Nash beat Oleksandra Doroshenko 6-1, 6-2, Ellie Wright defeated Isabella Krupa 6-1, 6-1, Mackenzy Middlebrooks got the better of Kseniya Zonova, 6-1, 6-2, and Amina Ismail bested Kelly Sicha, 6-2, 6-1.

In the two matches the coaches agreed to retire, Clare Raley led Anais Emelie 6-4, and Taylor Gruber led Alessandra Maya Thompson, 7-6.

Overall, the duel was an impressive start for the Tigers to a doubleheader that concluded with a victory over Central Arkansas.

Mizzou tennis is next in action Friday, January 26th, at Cornell, the Big Red’s first match of the season. The duel is the start of three days in Ithaca, New York for the Tigers, who then match up with Army and Binghamton on the 28th.
