Grant Green – 23 Sports

Just before noon last Thursday the Missouri Tigers hosted Saint Louis University after a tough stretch of losses to SEC competition. Mizzou took care of doubles without much resistance as the three teams won the three sets by a total score of 18-6.

When the competition came over to the singles side, everything was smooth sailing for No. 3 to No. 6 singles, nobody having a closer than 6-3 set. However, No. 1 Singles Ellie Wright and No. 2 Valentina Vazquez were both taken to tiebreaker third sets.

Ellie Wright dropped her first set (2-6) to Elizabeth Mintusova, she was the only one on the lineup to do so. However, a back and forth second set threw the momentum towards Wright’s direction, winning the set (7-6) with a dominant (7-2) tiebreak win. Not to be confused with the tiebreak set, the third and final set. In that set, both girls showed fight after once again going to a tiebreaker with then tie-breaking set, but Ellie Wright would come out victorious, winning the tiebreaker in extra points (8-6), giving her that seventh game.

Valentina Vazquez had her work cut out as well, for #2 singles, she won her first set (7-6), (7-5) in the tiebreaker. However, her opponent Mariona Perez took over the second set, as Vazquez would drop the set (1-6). In another hard-fought final set to complete the sweep, Vazquez finished the match-winning (7-6), (7-4) in the tiebreaker.

Mizzou will hit the road this weekend as they take on Drake University, Sunday, 10:00 a.m., this will be their last non-conference game for the remainder of their season.
