Mizzou tennis defeated the Wichita State Shockers on Friday to continue their strong start to the season as they improved to 5-1.

The Tigers continued their dominance in doubles with their sixth consecutive doubles point to open the season. Vivien Ábrahám and Ellie Wright started things off strong with a 6-4 victory over Lingwei Kong and Esther Thebault at the number two doubles spot. That dominance continued at the number three doubles spot with Marta Oliveira and Elys Ventura defeating Wichita State’s Ting-Ya Hsu and Natsumi by a score of 7-5.

Mizzou continued their momentum into singles with wins at the number one, two, and three singles spots. Serena Nash was the first to win as she defeated Esther Thebault 6-3, 6-3 at the number two spot. She came back after trailing 0-3 in the first set. The next victory took place at the number one singles spot where Ellie Wright defeated Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva 6-4, 6-4. The final win came from Marta Oliveira as she defeated Wichita State’s Lingwei Kong 6-3 in the first set and
7-6 (4) in tiebreak in the second set.

After the win, the coach, Colt Gaston, said “I was very proud of our team tonight. I thought we did a great job executing in the doubles point. Wichita State has won some big doubles points this season, and we knew that was a huge part of the match today. Winning that point was a big momentum swing for us. In this match, starting well in the singles was our biggest goal and I thought everyone did a phenomenal job of that and that really created a great energy we could feed off of on all the courts. We will look to keep building on that in practice tomorrow to prepare for Sunday. Thank you to our great fans who came out today. Your support really helped us win today.”

Next, the Tigers will try to continue their strong start against Old Dominion and Bradley in a double header on Sunday.
