After a very strong 4-0 start to the season by the Tigers, they suffered their first loss on Sunday by the Kansas State Wildcats.

The Tigers continued their strong doubles play with two early victories. The number one doubles team of Serena Nash and Gabrielle Goldin defeated Kansas State’s Margot Decker & Anna Turco 6-3. The second victory was taken by the number three doubles team of Marta Oliveira and Elys Ventura. They easily defeated Karine-Marion Job and Ines Mesquita by a score of 6-1.

In singles, the Tigers only managed to take one victory. That win came from freshman Elys Ventura at the number five singles spot. She defeated Kansas State’s Ines Mesquita in a three set thriller. After dropping the first set 3-6, she proceeded to win the next two 6-2, 6-0. With the victory, Ventura improved to 6-1 on the season.

After the loss, coach Colt Gaston said, “We battled tough today. I thought we played one of our best doubles points of the year so far and got off to a great start. I give a lot of credit to Kansas State for turning it around on us and getting off to an early lead in singles. I was proud of the way we fought back to get the final two matches down the wire, but ultimately they played the big points a little better than us today. We definitely had some positives to build on and we will take that into practice next week to prepare for some big matches ahead.”

Next up the Tigers will take on Wichita State at home on Friday.
