The Missouri women’s tennis team dropped a match for the first time this year, (1-1) 4-0 against No. 8 California (2-0) on Monday. This match was part of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Final in Berkley, California.

The Tigers lost the doubles point and two singles matches and were unable to recover in the next four matches, resulting in a shut out.

Cal’s 38th doubles pairing in the nation, consisting of Olivia Hauger and Karla Popovic, dominated Missouri’s duo to kick off the event.

Three total matches were abandoned after Cal’s early dominant performance.

The first consisted of Popovic again, who also played well in the singles event as she defeated Missouri’s junior Brianna Lashway 7-6 in the first set before the match was ended.

Another competitive singles match was cut short due to Cal’s dominance in the other pairings, as senior Cassidy Spearman for Mizzou took the first set against Denise Starr 6-4. However, Starr was able to recover to win the second set 6-4 before the third set was cut off.

The final match that was cut short was a competition between Missouri freshman Tate Schroeder who faced Cal’s Hauger. Schroeder played a tough first set, losing 7-5, and led the second set 3-1 before the match was disconnected.

Mizzou will travel to Logan, Utah, to face Utah State on Wednesday.
