Wednesday, Mizzou’s women’s basketball team traveled to St. Louis to face the Saint Louis Billikens. The Tigers fell short of a victory to Saint Louis by a score of 72-61. Their record is now 10-4 overall.

Sophie Cunningham, Cierra Porter and Kayla McDowell led the way for the Tigers on the court. Cunningham led in scoring and assists for the game with 21 points and four assists. The sophomore guard was 4-for-6 behind the arc which made this Cunningham’s third game this season with at least 20 points. Porter made a large contribution from the free throw line, going 6-for-7 for the night. The sophomore forward finished with 16 points and nine rebounds. McDowell had a season high of nine. Both Porter and McDowell led in rebounds for the team, which helped the Tigers outrebound the Billikens 35-32. The Tigers have outrebounded their opponent in 11 of 14 games this season.

The game went back and forth in the first quarter. Eventually, Mizzou’s defense helped them grasp the lead and force several turnovers for SLU. At the end of the first, the Tigers led 19-14.

The Tigers overpowered the Billikens in the second quarter, only allowing them to score six points. Mizzou nailed four 3-pointers, which helped push the score to 35-20 going into halftime.

Within the third, the Tigers held the lead; however, they lost it quickly in the fourth. Saint Louis went on a run to eliminate their deficit and push themselves in front of Mizzou with three minutes left to play. The Billikens won the game with clutch free throws and several defensive stops at the end of the game. The Tigers finish 10-4 in nonconference play.

Mizzou plays next against Georgia in their first SEC matchup on Sunday, Jan. 1. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. at Mizzou Arena. The game will be broadcasted on SEC Network.
