Mizzou Women’s Basketball Grind Out Win Against Missouri State, 69-59

The #23 Mizzou Women’s Basketball won its third straight game and picked up their first true road win of the season on Sunday evening, defeating the Missouri State Bears 69-59 in Springfield, MO. Mizzou has won three of its last four meetings with Missouri State.

The game was in their hand in the Tigers for most of the game but Missouri State never fell far behind. By the time the game entered the 4th quarter the score was 56-52, but the Tigers toke the opportunity to pull away in the final quarter to take the largest lead of the game and win. The Tigers were able to pull away with seven minutes left in a one-possession game when a game-changing 8-0 run and build a 66-56 advantage. The Bears were held without a field goal for more than five minutes of game clock during the momentum swing and were held to 3-of-17 shooting in the entire quarter.

The Top Tigers of the game were Sophie Cunningham, Cierra Porter, and Amber Smith. Junior Sophie Cunningham (Columbia, MO) scored a team-high 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting while pulling down five rebounds. She has surpassed 25 points twice in four games this season. Junior Cierra Porter (Columbia, MO) fell short of another double-double she scored eight points and pulled down a team-best 12 rebounds. Sophomore Amber Smith (Shreveport, La) matched her career-high with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting. This is her sixth time scoring double digits in her career and the Tigers are 6-0 when she does.

Mizzou will head out to Berkeley, California Friday to play in the Cal Classic Tournament where they will play against Coppin State at 6 P.M. CT at Haas Pavilion. If they win they will play against either California or Manhattan November 25.
