The Mizzou women’s basketball team kicked off the 2014 campaign with a 67-61 win over Lindenwood University on Wednesday night. Senior guard Morgan Eye led the Tigers with 17 points on 6-8 shooting in the victory.

The game, played at the Hernes Center with Mizzou Arena being under construction, was classified as an exhibition.

Mizzou jumped out to a quick start in the first quarter, led by sophomore Lindsey Cunningham who helped run the Tiger offense. After knocking down a few uncontested shots, and hitting multiple three pointers, Mizzou found themselves up 22-12 after the eight minute mark.

Lindenwood kept themselves in the game, however, as they found success from the three point line. Four of the Lions first six field goals were from behind the arc.

Mizzou then went on a run. Led by back-to-back threes from Eye, the Tigers opened up the game by going on a 10-0 run. Eye would score all 17 of her points in the first half, shooting five of six from distance.

Mizzou went into the half shooting 50 percent from the field, and led 47-29 over the Lions.

As the second half began, the Tiger defense stifled the Lindenwood offense, allowing just two made shots in the first seven minutes of the second half. Jordan Frericks led this effort, recording five rebounds, a steal, and a block in the opening minutes of the half. Frericks ended the game with 11 rebounds.

As the Tigers pulled ahead, some of the younger players for Mizzou got valuable minutes in the second half. Highly touted recruit Bri Porter and junior Juanita Robinson added 16 points total in their efforts.

A late Lindenwood rally led by Kassidy Gengenbacher, who led all scorers with 28 points, made things interesting, but Missouri would pull through in the end with the final score of 67-61.

The Tigers have one more exhibition left before their season officially begins. Missouri will take on Missouri Western on November 11 at 7:00 p.m. at the newly renovated Mizzou Arena.
