The Missouri Tiger wrestling team stayed perfect on Saturday with another victory over a top 25 opponent, the No. 13 Northern Iowa Panthers, 23-9 at the West Gymnasium in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Tigers won seven of the ten individual matches, two by major decisions.

The meet got off to a less than optimal start for Missouri, with No. 29 Barlow McGhee losing 7-4 to No. 19 Jay Schwarm in the 125 class to give the Panthers a quick 3-0 lead. McGhee’s fellow Tigers were able to pick up the slack however, winning the next six matches.

No. 8 John Erneste got the Tigers their first dual points and was one of the  major decision victors, beating Jack Wagner 13-3 in the 133 class. No. 3 Jaydin Eierman followed that up with a win over No. 9 Josh Alber 12-6 in the 141 class, and No. 3 Grant Leeth just got by No. 8 Max Thomsen 4-3 in the 149 class.

In the 157, No. 4 Joey Lavallee got the Tigers’ second major decision of the day, defeating Logan Ryan 10-1. No. 24 Connor Flynn then beat Isaiah Patton 8-4 in the 165 class to give the Tigers a 17-3 lead overall, and No. 4 Daniel Lewis added on with a 13-10 win over No. 7 Taylor Lujan in the 174 class.

It was there the Tigers’ match winning streak would end. No. 10 Drew Foster of UNI beat No. 16 Canten Marriott 6-3 in the 184 to give the Panthers their second victory of the day and trim the Mizzou advantage to 20-6 overall. No. 7 Willie Mikius put the Tigers back up by 17 with an 8-4 win over No. 14 Jacob Holschiag in the 197 class. In the final match of the day, HWT, Northern Iowa’s Carter Isley beat Wyatt Koelling 8-3 to bring the final to 23-9 Mizzou

The next step for the Tigers is the MAC championships in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. The Tigers have dominated the tournament since joining the MAC, winning in their first five tries from 2013-2017.
