The No. 12 Mizzou wrestling team fell to Illinois on Thursday night 19-14 at Francis Howell High School. The Tigers are now 0-2 on the season after the devastating loss in front of a 1,877 person crowd. Although they suffered a loss, the tigers did have wins at 141, 149, 157 and 197 pounds. This also included bonus-point wins at 141 and 149 as well. However, in the end, Illinois took the win with 6 of the 10 bouts. To start, Mizzou dropped the first two bouts at 125 and 133 where as Illinois took a 6-0 lead going into the 141-pound bout. Redshirt junior, Grant Leeth, made his season debut as he took on Illinois opponent, We Rachel. Leeth did a good job of getting on the board with a 10-2 huge decision followed by a two-point stall call late with 2:27 time to steal the bonus-point, ultimately leading the tigers into the dual. Another tiger that made an impact was sophomore Brock Mauller with three takedowns and a riding time point that secured the major. He gave Mizzou N 8-6 lead heading into 157. Following Mauller, Illinois won the next 3 bouts after intermission and sophomore Canten Marroit couldn’t come up with the win against 18th-ranked Zac Braunagel, 15-6. Above all, the tigers put up a good effort, but they couldn’t pull through. Mizzou will be back again next Thursday at 6:30 to face Central Missouri and Missouri Valley for a double header.
