Sunday, February 7 –

For the second consecutive season, Mizzou wrestling became the Mid-American Conference Regular Season Champions after defeating Northern Illinois (6-7, 1-4). With a 29-6 victory over Old Dominion last week, the Tigers entered the dual against Northern Illinois ranked No. 5 in the USA Today/NWCS Coaches poll and No. 6 in the Internet Tournament Rankings.

The first win of the day came from redshirt senior 174-pounder Blaise Butler, single-handedly putting Mizzou over NIU as he pinned redshirt junior Trace Engelkes at 1:53 for six points. He was followed by redshirt senior 184-pounder Cody Johnston, who jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead in the first before finishing with a second-period pin for the win against sophomore 184-pounder Quinton Rosser.

Junior 197-pounder J’den Cox won over No. 16-ranked Shawn Scott with a 15-1 major decision, extending Mizzou’s lead to 16-4. Cox had previously earned 5th place in the 2015 NCAA All-American competition as well as a 2015 MAC Championship.

After a win by redshirt sophomore Barlow McGhee at 125 pounds, the Huskies’ Gabe Morse pulled NIU within five points of the Tigers while facing redshirt junior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes. However, Mayes scored an escape with less than 10 seconds to clinch the win, prolonging his undefeated streak to 22-0.

The Tigers will finish off the regular season schedule with two road duals next week. They will face Appalachian State on Friday, Feb. 12, at 5:30 p.m., followed by No. 3 North Carolina State on Sunday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m. N.C State is currently undefeated.
