Mizzou XC Sends Individual Runners to Gary Stoner Invitational

Saturday, October 6-

The Missouri cross country teams sent a small squad of runners to participate in the Gary Stoner Invitational on Saturday in Fayette, Mo. The event was hosted by Central Methodist University, and Mizzou had a successful day overall.

The men’s team recently broke into the national rankings for the first time in 12 years, settling in at No. 30. The squad sent a single representative in freshman Hayden Merkel.

In the 8k, Merkel ran a 26:09.33, good enough for 13th place. It was Merkel’s best finish of the season in time and placing. His previous best time was 26:47.82.

The women’s team sent three representatives in freshman Maggie Angst, freshman Morgan Nelson and junior Marie O’Leary.

Angst finished 11th with a time of 19:11.41, her best time of the season. In her first race of the fall campaign, Nelson finished 17th with a time of 19:23.19. O’Leary rounded out the women with a season-best time. She clocked in at 19:31.45, good for 21st place.

Without a full roster competing, Mizzou was not involved in team scoring. Central Missouri claimed the men’s team title and Central Methodist grabbed the women’s team championship.

Mizzou’s next event will be at 12:00 p.m. Friday at the Adidas Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wis.
