MU Athletics Receive $8.3 Million Gift from Walsworth Family

Tuesday, Jan. 29-

The MU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics just received a big boost. Don and Audrey Walsworth gave $8.3 million to the department in support of Missouri athletics. The donation is intended to bolster Mizzou’s ongoing transition to the Southeastern Conference.

The funds are specifically set aside to improve and expand athletic facilities, build new clubhouses for the men’s and women’s golf teams and make renovations to Faurot Field regarding capacity.

Both the men’s and women’s golf coaches were ecstatic about the news. Men’s golf coach Mark Leroux said the new facility would work wonders for training current athletes and recruitment, while women’s coach Stephanie Priesmeyer added that the facilities help Mizzou become more competitive with the top programs in the country.

Athletic director Mike Alden was also on hand at the donation ceremony. Alden thanked the Walsworths for their inspiring gesture, noting that it would certainly have a positive impact on current and future Missouri athletes. Chancellor Brady Deaton, university board members and athletic department representatives made appearances to show their support of the funds.

Don Walsworth is an MU alum and the CEO of Walsworth Publishing Company Inc. He is also a former chairman of the Missouri Board of Curators. Walsworth saw his donation as a chance to give back to the university that gave him everything. This isn’t the only donation from the Walsworths. The most recent gift brings their total contribution to MU to $14 million.

Mizzou’s move to the SEC has brought plenty of money to the university. Just five days before the Tigers were officially members of the SEC, MU received $30 million for the expansion and development of facilities. In December, anonymous donors pledged $6.4 million to the Tiger Scholarship Fund through 2023.

Although Mizzou hasn’t made the best first impression in its new conference, this and previous gifts say better times lie ahead.
