The second theatrical trailer was recently released for “Into the Woods.” This film is based on a musical of the same title that combines elements from multiple fairy tales and intertwines them into one original story.

“I’ve always loved fairy tales and fantasies my whole life, so going to see a movie that incorporates all of those classic tales into one epic story is going to be one magical experience,” said MU freshman Erin Bormett.

The movie trailer includes an overview of the plot. “Into the Woods” follows the path of the baker and the baker’s wife, a couple cursed to be childless by a witch. The witch assigns them several unique and difficult to attain items to bring back to her in order the curse to be removed. The hunt to track down these items causes these characters to encounter other characters of the fairy tale world. Through these interactions and more, viewers get a glimpse into their journeys as well and how their stories all connect with that of the baker and his wife.

The trailer additionally features the cast singing the opening prologue and Meryl Streep as the witch singing “Stay With Me.” The first trailer did not include the cast singing, which was not shocking to some fans of the musical. The inclusion of singing in the new trailer pleasantly surprised fans awaiting the film’s release.

“One thing about the new trailer that I liked is that usually when movies are made with musicals, music is usually left out (in trailers) because people think that it will draw more people, but they didn’t do that with this one,” said Anna Maples, MU freshman and avid Broadway musical fan.

Stephen Sondheim, composer of the music and lyrics for the musical, announced that there have been some minor changes from the original plot of the musical, but also that the film is “a faithful adaptation to the musical” and “a first-rate movie”.

“From what I’ve seen, it looks like they’ve really stayed true to the material, and I really like the feel of it,” said Maples.

The movie has a star-studded cast featuring future “The Late Late Show” host James Corden as the baker, Emily Blunt as the baker’s wife, Anna Kendrick of “Pitch Perfect” fame as Cinderella, Chris Pine as Cinderella’s prince, experienced actor Johnny Depp as the wolf, and critically acclaimed actress Meryl Streep as the witch. Many people are eager to see what the ensemble cast will do with their roles.

“I’m really excited to see what the cast will do with this version, because there are a few actors I did not know could sing who are in it,” said Bormett. “I’m curious to see how that’s going to play out, and I’m excited because they’re good actors.”
