No. 8 Texas Defeats No. 56 Missouri 5-2 in Tennis Matchup

Sunday, March 18 –

The No. 8 Longhorn tennis team exerted their dominance over the No. 56 Tigers on Sunday at the Green Tennis Center, coming away with a 5-2 victory.

It didn’t come easy, but ultimately, Texas nearly defeated Missouri player for player from top to bottom.

The Longhorns claimed all three doubles matches. Lina Padegimaite and Noel Scott, ranked 23rd nationally, had to battle for their victory, as Missouri’s Nina Pantic and Jamie Mera fought out an 8-7 loss.

No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matchups weren’t as close. Texas won 8-1 and 8-3, respectively.

At No. 2 singles, the Tigers’ Rachel Stuhlmann stormed from behind to defeat Scott 4-6, 7-5, 9-11. Despite trailing in the second set, Stuhlmann came back and forced a third set tiebreaker, in which she finished strong again. She tallied the five final points.

Missouri’s only other singles victory also came in dramatic fashion. No. 6 singles player Annemijn Koenen also pulled off a second set comeback that led to her tiebreaker victory, resulting in a 6-7, 7-5, 12-10 line.

Texas captured singles victories in No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5. Only one of them went to a third set tiebreaker, and that was due to Mera, who forced three competitive sets against Padegimaite at No. 4.

Missouri ended non-conference play on three of four wins. But since beginning Big 12 play, the Tigers are on a two-match losing streak. Their Big 12 conference success, yet to be found this year, will have to spark up on a tough six-match road trip next week. Friday’s match at Oklahoma State kicks off the action.
