The second most important part of Oscar night, just behind the awards themselves, is the fashion. Everyone came out in their best dresses and suits and while some blew me away, others left me wanting more.

Janelle Monae at the 2017 Oscars

Janelle Monae

Monae has been killing it all awards season with her original, custom made looks. Oscar night was no difference as Monae shined in an ethereal black Elie Saab dress. The beautiful details shined on the red carpet and cemented Monae has a fashion icon.

Ruth Negga at the 2017 Oscars

This delicate, lace dress seemed to be perfectly suited for the elegant Negga. The lace detail elevates the dress, as does the matching accessories (especially the headband). The only thing I would change is the dark makeup that didn’t flatter her as much.

Actors going to awards shows have it incredibly easy, so it’s always nice when the men switch it up, whether it be the ruffled dress shirt (Gosling) or a cool, different color (Ahmed), any deviation from the same old untailored black tuxedo is always fun to see.

Davis capped an elegant awards fashion run with a vibrant, flattering dress fit for a winner.

Mixed Feelings

Nicole Kidman at 2017 Oscars

Nicole Kidman

A new style from high fashion designers is incredibly pale dresses for incredibly pale people. I’m not a fan of this style, especially as an incredibly pale person who doesn’t want to blend into anything I wear. Still, the jewel details in this dress from nominee Kidman is still beautiful. If only the color was a little different, or the skin tone of the wearer was different.

Emma Stone at 2017 oscars

Emma Stone

One one hand, I like the old Hollywood glam of this dress and Stone’s hair and makeup. On the other, I think the color washes her out and there is too much going on. It just doesn’t seem like a dress for an Oscar winner.

Scarlett Johansson at 2017 Oscars

Scarlett Johansson

What to say about this dress. There are just so many things wrong with it. First, the trashy, cheap pattern that looks like it’s from Walmart. Then, the equally-cheap looking belt that doesn’t match the dress in any way. For someone as beautiful as Johansson, this dress managed to make her look all kinds of wrong.

Charlize Theron at 2017 Oscars

Charlize Theron

Don’t get me wrong, this dress is nice. It’s high fashion (Theron is a spokesperson for Dior, so she often gets custom made dresses). It’s just so boring for someone who has proven herself to be a fashion icon. Even the hair and makeup seem rushed. She still looks beautiful, but I had higher expectations than this tired metallic dress.

Casey Affleck at 2017 Oscars

Like I said, men can roll out of bed, dress for the Oscars, and win one. And they shouldn’t. The messy beard and hair completely undermine any suit

Daisy Johnson at 2017 Oscars

Daisy Johnson

There is just too much going on in this golden dress. The ruffles and the wrinkles do nothing to help her case. Plus, she’s young. She shouldn’t be wearing something so frumpy. It’s original, but not in a good way.
