Poetry in the Park Was Relocated to The Shack

Kellan Marvin-23 News

Students filed into The Shack on Thursday night after threats of rain moved the MSA/GPC Black Programming Committee event, Poetry in the Park, indoors.

All attendees were offered free sandwiches while they watched fellow MU students perform their original work.

Poetry in the Park began with open mic. allowing any student an opportunity to perform their spoken word poetry.

The audience supported their peers’ performances about relationships, deciding what to write about and coloring.

After students finished open mic, special performer Shihan took the stage. Shihan is best known for his work on the HBO show Def Poetry Jam.

His poetry centered around his role as a husband and father, though he appealed to the college audience by reading a poem he wrote while he was a student anxious about finding a job and paying off student loans.

Between poems, Shihan answered students’ questions about his life and his approach to poetry.

More poetry readings will be held throughout the semester, and any student interested is encouraged to attend and perform.
