COLUMBIA- Mizzou professor Joel Poor is no longer teaching after making a comment towards an international student some felt was racist and xenophobic.

In a Zoom video of a Marketing 3000 class circulated on social media, a student responds to Poor that they are from Wuhan, China. Poor then remarks, “Wuhan? Well let me get my mask on okay. Hold on… no” with a chuckle.

The video sparked outrage on social media and Mizzou quickly responded, assuring that they had shared it with the Office for Civil Rights and Title IX. This evening, a Canvas post by Poor announced that he had been “relieved of teaching duties”.

On Twitter, some argued that Poor should not have been fired and saw the comment as a lighthearted joke.

One user commented, “Everyone needs to calm down. It’s a joke.” Another claimed the video had been taken out of context and the full video was not posted.

Others celebrated Poor’s removal and condemned the comment as racist and xenophobic. The account #StillConcerned pushed for Poor’s removal.

“Let me know when he doesn’t have a job at Mizzou anymore. Any other outcome and there’s something wrong with the system” they tweeted prior to Poor’s announcement.
