The Mizzou women’s tennis team travelled to Houston to take on No. 23 Rice. In the seven matches which took place, Mizzou only captured one win, losing 6-1 to the Owls. However, the lone victory for the Tigers came from Cierra Gaytan-Leach, who faced off against No. 60 Natalie Beazant at the No. 1 singles. Gaytan-Leach won 6-3 in the first set, lost 6-4 in the second, but was able to capture the win in the third tiebreaking set, 10-8.

Rice began the match with a 1-0 advantage; Katherine Ip and Solomiya Zinko beat Mizzou’s
Kelli Hine and Tracy Dong in the No. 3 doubles match. Gaytan-Leach also played in the No. 1 doubles match with her partner Rachel Stuhlmann, losing 8-3. Mizzou’s No. 2 doubles pair of Madison Rhyner and Cassidy Spearman proved to be more of a challenge, but eventually fell 8-6.

Rice also took the rest of the singles matches after Gaytan-Leach’s second win of the spring season against a ranked opponent. In the No. 2 singles, Dominique Harmath of Rice beat Hine in two sets, 6-4 and 6-1. Ip defeated Hine also in the No. 3 singles, winning 6-2 both sets. Liat Zimmerman bested Rhyner 6-3 and 6-2 in the No. 4 singles, while Spearman lost to Kimberly Anicete 7-6 and 6-4. At the No. 6 singles, Allison Ho won over Dong without much challenge in two sets, with scores of 6-1 and 6-2.

Mizzou next takes the court Friday, March 28 at 3 p.m. against Tennessee.
