Senator and keynote speaker Claire McCaskill spoke about legislative changes relating to sexual assaults on college campuses last Saturday.

“Senator McCaskill’s commitment to sexual assault prevention has been steadfast. She doesn’t just say ‘It’s on us,’ Senator McCaskill says ‘it’s on me,’” Said MSA President Peyton Head.

McCaskill’s bill provides accountability, provides due process to sexual assault victims, clarifies the role of confidential advisors and much more. The bill is meant to amend the Higher Education Act of 1965 and the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act to combat campus sexual violence, and for other purposes.

The Senator explained how this legislation will change college campuses across the nation. McCaskill claimed that MU is already ahead on some aspects of the bill, but it’s time to get other universities up to speed in order to make all students feel safer.

McCaskill talked about how preventing sexual assault begins with student involvement and the right resources on campus.

“You have a great deal of power and I wanted to come, and look you in the eye, and encourage you to use that power”.
