On Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021, fraternity Sigma Nu held their 2021 charity concert Sigmapalooza at The Blue Note with California-based duo Hippie Sabotage as the headliner for the night. All proceeds benefited local nonprofit foundation Welcome Home.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many returning students have not gotten to experience many of the in-person events traditionally held at MU. Sigma Nu member Tannen Rink recalls how for many of these students, events like Sigmapalooza have been a breath of fresh air.

“You could see everyone was just having a really good time, especially those students who haven’t had the opportunity to see in-person events in a while due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Rink said.

All ticket sales from the night benefited local nonprofit Welcome Home. Since 1992 Welcome Home’s transitional living facilities have provided veterans who are struggling to find housing or employment with the opportunity to land back on their feet and to feel empowered. Through their charity concert, Sigma Nu was able to raise roughly $22,250 for the nonprofit.

“Welcome Home is an organization that works to honor veterans and restore their lives,” Rink said. “They not only provide housing but also provide meals and other necessities these homeless or at-risk veterans and their families might not be able to obtain, so we were super happy to support this amazing charity.”

More information on opportunities to volunteer with or donate to Welcome Home can be found on their website, welcomeveterans.org.
