Softball Squad Powers its Way to Doubleheader Sweep

Friday, Feb. 15-

The No. 7 Missouri women’s softball team did not find themselves gazing at the beautiful beach in Santa Barbara, Calif., but instead the Tigers found UCSB and Fresno State lost in the beauty as Missouri started off the season 2-0 in the Gaucho Classic.

In the Tigers’ first game, the team defeated the UCSB Gauchos 11-3 after the team put up a six-run fifth inning to cause the mercy rule.

Senior Nicole Hudson lead the way for the Tigers as she had an outstanding night going three for three with two home runs and four RBIs. In total the team stroked five home runs against the Gauchos.

Sophomore Bailey Erwin got the first start of the 2013 season for the Tigers as she pitched a complete game and only allowed three runs. Erwin still has never lost a game as a pitcher and is now 9-0 since her freshman year.

In the second game of the day, Missouri faced the Fresno State Bulldogs and defeated them 4-0.

Following her incredible season last year as a Tiger, pitcher Chelsea Thomas continued her hot streak as she pitched a shut out complete game with nine strikeouts. Thomas was a part of the 2013 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Watch List and she started her season on the right track.

All of the runs against the Bulldogs came off of home runs. Kelsea Roth smashed two home runs while Hudson added another to her total.

The Tigers return to the Gaucho Classic on Saturday to take on Fresno State again at 1:15 p.m. and San Diego at 3:00 p.m.
